より

より marks the outdone standard, while のほうが marks the winner. Answers to どちらが questions take のほうが, not a bare より.

より ranks two named items against each other. いちばん ranks one member above its whole set (クラスの中なかで), with only two, より/のほうが returns.

より is a bare comparison between two named items (AはBより高たかい). 以上いじょうに treats it as a threshold the outcome exceeds, often one's own expectation (思おもっていた以上いじょうに).

から is the everyday, spoken word for "from". より is its stiffer, written twin, used for start times (十時じゅうじより開演かいえん).

より ranks two things on one named scale (安やすいより高たかい). くらいなら just refuses one option, with no scale at all.

より binds tightly to one comparison (弟おとうとは私わたしより背せが高たかい). に比くらべて can set several things against the standard at once (去年きょねんに比くらべて、今年ことしは寒さむいし雨あめも多おおい).

より ranks two things on a scale (高たかいより安やすいほうがいい). というより instead corrects the label for one thing (プロというよりファン).

より states a difference, needing a word after it (兄あにより背せが高たかい). と同おなじ claims plain equality, and と同おなじくらい softens it to about the same.

より rides a positive ending, while ほど…ない needs a negative one. ほど…ない also assumes B truly has the quality, which より never claims.

より here is frozen inside もとより, not the comparative one. 子こどもはもとより ranks nothing (子こどもより低ひくい compares two things).

より here isn't the comparative one. 歩あるくよりほかない says walking is all that's left, with no second item ever named.
