How it's formed5

All forms10

  • ぐらいguraicolloquial

    味あじわうぐらい

fully interchangeable; ぐらい is more spoken, くらい is the safer pick for writing.

  • くらいだkuraidaalternant

    味あじわうくらいだ

closes the sentence on the extent instead of modifying what follows — 涙なみだが出でるくらいだ, "it's enough to bring tears."

  • ぐらいだguraidacolloquial

    味あじわうぐらいだ

the voiced spelling, on the same closing shape — もう一度いちど見みに行いきたいぐらいだ.

  • くらいのkuraino+名詞めいしadnominal

sits in front of a noun to measure it — 豆まめくらいの大おおきさ, 自転車じてんしゃぐらいのスピード, 小学生しょうがくせいぐらいの男おとこの子こ.

  • くらいではkuraidehaalternant

  • くらいならkurainaraalternant

the small-amount くらい in front of なら, granting just that much (買かい物ものくらいなら引ひき受うけられる). After a plain verb, the same kana usually mean くらいなら's refusal instead.

  • politeくらいですkuraidesu

    味あじわうくらいです

Notes

ほど and くらい share the extent sense, but only ほど survives negation
(Bほど高たかくない) and only くらい minimizes. ぐらい and くらい are the
same word; the old this/that-vs-noun split is dead.
