Notes

This entry covers only the "after doing, on that basis" sequencing
sense. する上で "in the process of / when it comes to doing" (N2) and
plain spatial 机の上で "on top of the desk" are different readings of
the same surface and out of scope here.

Related patterns

Similar

  • てから is a bare temporal sequencer with no payload beyond order (シャワーを浴びてから寝る needs no deliberation); 上で implies the first action was a considered step that deliberately GROUNDS the second (相談した上で決める) — force it onto a routine, non-deliberate sequence (歯を磨いた上で寝た) and it reads oddly weighty.

  • あとで only claims the first event precedes the second, with no tie between them (十年前に卒業したあとで, any gap tolerated); 上で requires the two be causally linked — the second decision is explicitly grounded ON the first (相談したうえで決める), not just sequenced after it.
