  • そのかわりにsonokawarinialternant

    に is optional and adds nothing but weight; the bare そのかわり is commoner at the head of a spoken sentence.

  • その代かわりsonokawarialternant

    the kanji spelling, normal in print — 代か is the same 代か as 代かわりに.

Notes

The trade must feel fair; そのかわり offers something back. With no offer, just a surprise, それなのに is the word instead.
