が normally joins both halves inside one sentence (検討けんとうしましたが、見送みおくります). しかし needs the first half already finished with a full stop (何度なんども練習れんしゅうした。しかし、震ふるえた).

ところが commits to surprise, defeating an expectation (雨あめが降ふっていた。ところが、試合しあいは行おこなわれた). しかし just sets two facts against each other, no surprise needed (売上うりあげは伸のびた。しかし、利益りえきは横よこばいだ).

しかし fits any style, formal or casual. だが's plain だ clashes with ですます, so fiction uses だが, polite reports しかし.

でも is the everyday spoken choice, at home in chat and casual mail. しかし belongs to writing, でも to chat, swapping either sounds wrong.

しかし just signals something different is coming next. それでも admits the earlier reason was real (雨あめだ。それでも行いく), then goes ahead anyway.

しかし sets the next sentence against the last, and may overturn it outright. ただし leaves the last sentence whole, and carves out what it misses (入場にゅうじょうは無料むりょうです。ただし、予約よやくが必要ひつようです).

しかし turns the sentence against what came before (遅おくれた。しかし、謝あやまった). しかも instead drives it further the same way (遅おくれた。しかも、謝あやまらなかった).
