あまり〜ない

あまり means not very much (あまり食たべない). 全然ぜんぜん means not at all (全然ぜんぜん食たべない).

少すこしも means none at all (少すこしも痛いたくない). あまり means just a little (あまり痛いたくない).

Same scale, different point on it. あまり〜ない leaves a modest amount standing (あまり食たべない still eats), while ほとんど〜ない rounds that remainder down to nothing.

あまり still leaves a little behind (あまり高たかくない). 全まったく leaves nothing at all, and works with positives too (全まったく違ちがう).

あまり cuts how much of an act happens (あまり食たべない). めったに counts how often it happens at all (めったに食たべない).

あまり scales down against your own sense of normal, needing nothing said first (あまり高たかくない). そんなに points back at a degree someone just raised (そんなに高たかくない).

あまり scales things down on the speaker's own say-so. そう denies a degree just raised, and belongs to writing and careful speech.

あまり scales things down against the speaker's own sense of normal. たいして measures against an expectation someone else brought, denying it was much.

〜あまり(に) means "so much that" (緊張きんちょうのあまり、声こえが震ふるえた). あまり〜ない means "not very," and needs ない.
