Similar
代わりに needs the thing being replaced inside its own sentence (父の代わりに私が行く); そのかわり takes it from the sentence already finished, which lets the trade span two speakers' turns (「今日は無理」「じゃあそのかわり明日ね」).
Both pick up the previous sentence and add to it, in opposite directions — その上 piles a second point of the same sign on top (安い。その上早い), そのかわり concedes a drawback and offers something else in return (安い。そのかわり時間がかかる).
