しか〜ない

しか needs ない at the end (野菜やさいしか食たべない). ばかり does not (野菜やさいばかり食たべている).

しか alone sounds neutral, fine for writing. だけしか is stronger, and only for speaking.

だけ sits on a positive sentence and states the limit flatly (千円せんえんだけある). しか demands a negative one and reads as a complaint (千円せんえんしかない).

Both need a sentence ending in ない, 誰だれも empties the set, しか spares one member. 誰だれも来こなかった reports an empty room, 田中たなかさんしか来こなかった reports one with Tanaka.

しか needs a negative verb after it, and points at a shortfall (千円せんえんしかない). きり needs no negative at all (一度いちどきりのチャンス).

しか〜ない narrows down to exactly N, ruling out everything else (週末しゅうまつしか働はたらかない). を除のぞいて narrows away from N, keeping everything else (週末しゅうまつを除のぞいて働はたらく).

しか〜ない calls what is left too little (一ひとつしかない). ただ〜だけ calls the same amount unimportant (ただ一ひとつだけだ).

しか〜ない is the everyday form, at home in conversation. よりほかない is written-formal enough to sound like a press release aloud.

三みっつも says three feels like a lot. 三みっつしかない says too few, and しか always needs ない.

しか〜ない is split across the sentence, which itself must end negative (千円せんえんしかない). でしかない fuses onto a noun or な-adjective, its ない negating です itself (言いい訳わけでしかない).

しか reports a plain shortfall (千円せんえんしかない, only a thousand yen left). なんか instead judges the noun itself (千円せんえんなんか、すぐなくなる, a thousand yen won't get you far).

しか after a noun leaves ない far off, as the sentence's own ending (水みずしか飲のまない). After a plain verb, しかない fuses into one word instead (歩あるくしかない).

さえ names an extreme case, to say every lesser case fails too (時間じかんさえない). しか just states a plain shortfall, with no scale (時間じかんしかない).
