Formation

Variant notes

Notes

Kanji と言う means someone literally says it; the naming and clause-packaging uses stay in kana という. In the content use という ALLOWS だ (無理[むり](だ)という結論[けつろん]) where かどうか/embedded か forbid it; the naming use takes none.

Related patterns

Similar

  • Same quotative と over a finished plain clause — 言う puts the content in someone's mouth, 思う in the speaker's head; 来ると言っている reports their words and commits them, 来ると思う offers only the speaker's own guess.

Lookalikes

  • Identical と, opposite parse, and what follows decides it — ドアを開けると言った is quotative (said he'd open it), ドアを開けると寒い is conditional (when you open it, it's cold); only the quotative と can relax to って.
