Notes

The main clause must be the bad news; a desirable result forces と or たら
instead. Repeating the frame (ってはみ、ってはみ) is a
separate iterative pattern, not this one.

Related patterns

Similar

  • と states a consequence that follows automatically and passes no judgment on it (すとく); ては presupposes the consequence is unwelcome, so it cannot host a neutral or happy result — ×毎日まいにちはしっては健康けんこうになる, where 毎日まいにちはしると健康けんこうになる is ordinary.

  • ては takes any undesirable condition, one-off events included (バスがおくれてはわない); ようでは needs the clause to describe a STANDING state or habit that stands as evidence about someone, which is why its main clause is a verdict on their prospects (見込みこみはない, さきおもいやられる) rather than a plain consequence.

Lookalikes

  • てはいけない is a lexicalised prohibition — its tail is fixed and somebody is being forbidden something (ここで写真しゃしんってはいけない); bare ては is only the condition half and takes any negative verdict at all after it (こまる, からだこわす, わない) with any subject, so あめっては中止ちゅうしだ forbids nobody anything.

  • One kana apart and logically opposite — も waves the condition aside as making no difference (あめっても決行けっこうする), は makes it the decisive cause of a bad result (あめっては中止ちゅうしだ); read ては as ても and the sentence's verdict reverses.
