Variant notes
- ていただきたい — humble いただく on the same tail — 一度見ていただきたい. The everyday face of business requests.
- ていただきたく — the tail left open to run into 存じます/お願い申し上げます — written business Japanese, almost never spoken.
- てもらいたいんですが — hedged and trailing off, which is how the wish is actually opened in conversation — ちょっと手伝ってもらいたいんですが。
- ないでいただきたい — humble いただく on the negative wish — 展示品にはお手を触れないでいただきたく存じます; notices and staff speaking to customers.
Notes
what you want rather than asking, so aimed upward in speech it is replaced by
the question ていただけませんか.
Related patterns
Similar
てほしい is the spoken default and rides an adjective, so it stops where politeness starts; てもらいたい rides a verb, which is what lets it climb into ていただきたい and ていただきたく存じます — ほしい has no humble form at all, so business writing takes this line.
てもらった reports the favor as actually received and dates a finished event (昨日直してもらった); てもらいたい reports nothing, so a time word on it can only be a deadline (明日までに直してもらいたい) — the たい is the whole difference between a report and a request.
ていただきたい announces what the speaker wants and leaves the listener nothing to answer; ていただけませんか hands them a question they may decline, which is why spoken requests upward take the question and email takes ていただきたく.
Lookalikes
Both end in たい, and only the て marks who acts — 聞きたい puts the speaker at the listening, 聞いてもらいたい puts the other person there; the ます-stem form can never voice a wish about someone else's action.
