Formation

Notes

The same form doubles as a light honorific — 部長はもう帰られました is respect, not passive; only context separates them. The adversative use takes intransitives (雨に降られる), which no English passive can mirror.

Related patterns

Similar

  • Both recast an event from the affected person's seat — てもらう frames it as a favor the subject arranged or welcomed (直してもらった, I got it fixed), the passive as something merely undergone (勝手に直された, it was altered on me); the choice signals gratitude versus detachment or grievance.

Lookalikes

  • For G2 verbs the two are one homograph — 食べられる is "can eat" or "is eaten", and only particles and context decide (刺身が食べられる ability, 猫に刺身を食べられた suffered loss); G1 keeps them apart — 読める can, 読まれる passive.
