Formation

Notes

States (×住み終わる) and point-like events (×忘れ終わる) refuse it; rain "finishes" as 降りやむ, not ×降り終わる. The compound keeps を (本を読み終わる) although 終わる alone is intransitive. 終える is the take-charge sibling: 書き終える frames the agent closing the task, and skews written.

Related patterns

Similar

  • 読み終わった states the endpoint of a durative activity and nothing more; 読んでしまった adds totality or affect and also fits punctual verbs — 忘れてしまった works where ×忘れ終わった cannot.

Opposite

  • 始めるplain-antonym

The same masu-stem frame at opposite ends of the event — 始める opens activities and mere onsets alike (降り始める), while 終わる needs a completable activity, so 降り終わった sounds off where 降りやんだ is natural.

Lookalikes

  • Identical compound shape one tail apart — 書き終わる closes the activity, 書き続ける refuses the close; a skimming reader parses the shared masu-stem and coasts, so the tail verb carries the entire meaning.

finish doing; do all the way through
