Formation
{N}のみならずattaches to nounplain clause + のみならず(な-adjは であるのみならず)attaches to plain clause
Variant notes
- のみでなく — swaps the classical ならず for the modern でなく — same written register, much rarer, and like のみならず it still wants も on the second item.
Related patterns
Similar
One meaning zone split by register — だけでなく is neutral and dominates speech, while のみならず keeps the classical negative ならず and belongs to editorials, reports and academic prose; spoken, it sounds like a quotation.
のみならず keeps the classical ならず and stays written/literary (essays, reports); に限らず attaches only to nouns, while のみならず also takes whole clauses (詳しいのみならず) — so a clause needing "not only" reaches for のみならず regardless of register.
はもとより presents X as too obvious to argue and hangs off a noun only; のみならず makes no such appeal to the obvious and takes whole clauses as readily as nouns — which is why reports reach for のみならず and blurbs for はもとより.
Lookalikes
Shares のみ and reverses it — のみ closes the set to exactly N (会員のみ shuts everyone else out), while のみならず reopens it and obliges a second member (会員のみならず一般の方も).
