Formation

Notes

Verb + のみ lives almost entirely inside あとは〜のみ/ただ〜のみ ("all that
is left is to …"); step outside that frame and a bare あそぶのみ reads odd.
The noun frame carries no such restriction.

Related patterns

Similar

  • One meaning, two registers — だけ is the default everywhere, のみ is its written form and belongs to notices, contracts and reports; spoken のみ lands as if the speaker were reading a sign aloud.

Lookalikes

  • Shares のみ and reverses it — のみ closes the set to exactly N (会員のみ shuts everyone else out), while のみならず reopens it and obliges a second member (会員のみならず一般の方も).
