Related patterns
Similar
The same "become" split by word class — nouns and na-adjectives take になる (医者になる、静かになる), i-adjectives take stem+くなる (高くなる); the two never swap hosts, so the choice is grammar, not nuance.
になる states a bare change of state (春になる); ことになる wraps a whole event as an arranged outcome — 転勤することになった says somebody decided it, while 春になった claims nothing about anyone's hand in the change.
Same なる, different scope — になる flips a state (春になる), ようになる shifts what someone habitually does or can do, and only gradually; 話せるようになった marks an arrival after a stretch of change, not a switch.
Lookalikes
The same Nに + verb frame one verb apart — する is a choice by an agent (会議は金曜にする, we'll make it Friday), なる a change that just happens (金曜になる, Friday arrives); swapping them misassigns responsibility for the outcome.
