Related patterns

Similar

  • のみならず keeps the classical ならず and stays written/literary (essays, reports); に限らず attaches only to nouns, while のみならず also takes whole clauses (くわしいのみならず) — so a clause needing "not only" reaches for のみならず regardless of register.

  • はもとより opens by conceding X as too obvious to argue over before adding Y as the real news; に限らず makes no such concession about X's obviousness — it only denies that X marks the boundary of what applies.

Lookalikes

  • Same root 限る pulling opposite ways — 限り draws an outer boundary a condition must stay inside (きているかぎり), while に限らず erases exactly that kind of boundary by denying that X is the edge of what the claim covers.

  • Both negate 限る, but over different targets — とは限らない hedges the CERTAINTY of a claim ("it isn't necessarily true that…", たかものいとは限らない), while に限らず denies the EXCLUSIVITY of a scope ("not just this one") and takes no claim of certainty at all.

  • Same に限 root, opposite direction on identical morphology — に限らず widens a scope past N ("not just N"), while に限って narrows straight down to N, usually with an ironic sting ("of all things, N").
