aimed at N; designed for N — a product, service, or content built with a specific audience or use in mind

向け takes の before a noun (子供向けの本) but に before a verb (子供向けに作る);
it also predicates freely with だ／です (この本は子供向けだ, 法人向けです).

ために
Both can translate "for children," but のために frames the child as the BENEFICIARY of a specific act done on their behalf (子供[こども]のために作[つく]った "made it for the sake of [a] child," fine for one child you know), while N向け brands a product or content as designed for a whole target demographic as a category (子供向けの本[ほん] "a book aimed at children [as a market]") — swap them and 子供向けに作った sounds like market research, 子供のための本 sounds like a gift for one specific child.

向き
向け marks a DELIBERATE design target — someone built or aimed the item at that audience (子供[こども]向けの番組[ばんぐみ] "a program made for kids," 海外[かいがい]向けに輸出[ゆしゅつ]する "export it targeting overseas markets"); 向き marks a NATURAL fit with no design intent implied — the thing just happens to suit that audience or use (この靴[くつ]は雨[あめ]の日[ひ]向きだ "these shoes suit rainy days," not because anyone designed them for rain) — swapping them either claims an intent that wasn't there or denies one that was.
