Examples

even just X — a small amount of it is already enough to do the job or show the point

I can't afford it, but it's fun even if you only look. casual

一度いちど使つかっただけでも、ちがいがよくかる。

You can tell the difference clearly just from using it once. neutral

at least X — a wish or a request scaled down to the smallest version the speaker would settle for

全部ぜんぶ無理むりでも、名前なまえだけでもおぼえてかえりたい。

zenbu wa muri demo, namaedakedemo oboete kaeritai.

Even if I can't manage it all, I want to go home having learned even just the name. neutral

多忙たぼうのところ恐縮きょうしゅくですが、資料しりょうだけでもごらんいただけないでしょうか。

I am sorry to trouble you when you are busy, but might you at least look over the materials? formal

Notes

だけで on its own says the small amount is all it takes (るだけでかる).
The も concedes instead: the speaker will settle for that much, whether or
not it is enough.

Related patterns

Similar

  • だけ draws the boundary and stops (るだけだ, looking and nothing more); でも makes that minimum a concession the main clause must follow FROM, good verdict or bad — るだけでもたのしい, 想像そうぞうするだけでもぞっとする — so a predicate that grades the thing itself instead of the consequence, ×るだけでもあかい, has nothing to attach to.

  • さえ picks an extreme member to argue about the whole scale (子供こどもでさえっている, therefore everyone does); だけでも argues about nothing beyond itself and scales a wish or a request DOWN to its floor — はなしだけでもいて asks for less, not for proof about more.

Lookalikes

  • One kana apart and pointing opposite ways — だけでなく adds something on top of the だけ (るだけでなくさわれる, look and also touch), だけでも settles for the だけ and asks for no more; read one as the other and what the sentence demands inverts.
