Formation
{N}ばかりかattaches to nounplain clause + ばかりか(な-adjは なばかりか)attaches to plain clause
Variant notes
- のみか — the のみ-built twin, confined to written argument and old-fashioned even there — ばかりか is the shape to use unless you are deliberately writing stiff.
Related patterns
Similar
Same ばかり base, different force — ばかりでなく just adds a second member to the set, while ばかりか marks the second one as the bigger surprise and normally needs も/さえ/まで to carry it (謝りもしなかった).
ばかりか keeps the first item true and piles a bigger one on top of it (遅刻したばかりか謝りもしなかった); どころか throws the first item out as far too small or plain wrong (謝るどころか責任を押しつけた) — ばかりか cannot carry a contradiction, どころか cannot carry a plain addition.
Lookalikes
Adding か flips the direction — bare ばかり restricts to lopsided repetition (ゲームばかりしている scolds the narrowness), while ばかりか opens the count upward and always expects something further to follow.
